Per-platform gotchas

Zoom

Holds the mic exclusively. Quit Zoom fully before testing — the menu bar icon counts.

Google Meet

Re-prompts for permission per browser profile. Test in the profile you'll join from.

Microsoft Teams

Web vs desktop client use different device defaults. Restart the client after a device change.

What "passing" the test looks like

Meter moves when you speak at normal volume.
Bars stay green/yellow, not red. Red means clipping — your call audio will distort.
Selected device matches what you expect (not "MacBook Pro Microphone" when you have an external mic plugged in).

If the meter doesn't move

Reset the browser's mic permission for the test page (URL bar lock icon → Site settings → Microphone → Allow).
Close any conferencing app that may be locking the device.
Mac: System Settings → Sound → Input. Confirm the right device is selected and the input level moves when you speak there too. If it doesn't, the issue is at the OS level, not the browser.
